Gojo & Purell

It is now common knowledge that Gojo Industries (the manufactures of Purell) have gone into administration and have withdrawn from the UK/European market with immediate effect.

Unfortunately, there is virtually no stock available to purchase, most of this has been distributed to the NHS. As a result, you will need to consider changing over to one of our other dispensing systems.

Please telephone 01384 671505 to discuss this further with one of our helpful sales team.

Protecting Skin During Cold and Flu Season

hand sanitiser

When the colder months roll in, so do the increased risk of colds and flu. While we focus on preventing illness by boosting our immune systems and practising good hygiene, it’s important not to overlook the impact of cold and flu season on our skin. Frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitisers can leave skin feeling dry, irritated, and vulnerable.

Here’s how to protect your skin while maintaining proper hygiene during this time.

Choose Gentle Hand Soaps

Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs, but harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils. Opt for mild, moisturising or sensitive hand soaps with ingredients like aloe vera or glycerin, which cleanse effectively without causing excessive dryness.

Use Hand Sanitiser Wisely

Hand sanitisers are a convenient alternative to hand washing when soap and water aren’t available. However, those with high alcohol content can be drying if overused. When selecting a hand sanitiser, look for products that include moisturising ingredients like vitamin E or natural oils to help counteract dryness, or opt for alcohol-free hand sanitiser options that are gentler on skin.

Moisturise Regularly

Cold weather combined with frequent hand washing can lead to cracked, irritated skin. Regularly apply a good quality skin cream to replenish moisture and form a protective barrier. Look for products containing shea butter, urea, or ceramides, as these are particularly effective in hydrating and repairing the skin.

Avoid Hot Water

While it’s tempting to use hot water to warm up on a cold day, it can exacerbate dryness by stripping the skin of its protective oils. Use lukewarm water instead for hand washing, as it’s gentler on the skin while still effective at removing germs.

Wear Protective Gloves

If you’re exposed to harsh cleaning products or need to clean frequently, wear protective gloves to minimise direct contact with irritating chemicals. Additionally, wearing gloves outdoors during cold weather can protect your hands from wind and freezing temperatures, which can further dry out the skin.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water during winter months is essential for overall skin health. Hydration from within helps maintain the skin’s elasticity and moisture levels, reducing dryness and irritation.

Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating systems can reduce humidity levels, leading to drier skin. Using a humidifier at home or in the workplace can add moisture to the air, helping to keep your skin hydrated and comfortable.

Be Mindful of Overwashing

While hygiene is essential during cold and flu season, overwashing can do more harm than good. Balance your hand hygiene routine by washing your hands at critical moments, such as before eating, after using the bathroom, or after coughing or sneezing.

Taking care of your skin during cold and flu season doesn’t mean compromising on hygiene. With the right approach and products, you can maintain clean, healthy hands while protecting your skin from dryness and irritation. Small changes to your routine can make a big difference, ensuring your hands stay soft and comfortable through the chilly months.
